Parish Notes May 11, 2008

Special Events…

Today we are dedicating the stained glass windows at our 10:30 a.m. service. You will find the families’ dedications on the back panel of this bulletin.

Brendan White will perform at St. Luke’s on Sunday, May 18th at 4:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Please mark your calendars to support Brendan and enjoy a wonderful concert event!

Parish Groups… Opportunities to get involved…

RIFA Snack-Back-Pack feeds more than 200 students that get very little to eat on weekends. Current needs are Mac & Cheese, Granola Bars, Cereal Bars, Oatmeal Packages, Peanut Butter Crackers, Canned Spaghetti/Ravioli/Lasagna, Raisins, Canned Fruits & Vegetables, Cereal Packages and Cheese & Crackers. Please place your donations on the table outside the library for distribution to RIFA. Thanks to Henry Kipp for making sure these items are taken to RIFA on a regular basis!

RIFA Soup Kitchen is experiencing constant outages of the following 3 items.  If you’d like to help stock up the soup kitchen pantry, please consider donating butter, or bleach, plastic forks, paper towels, napkins or detergent for automatic dishwashers.

Please note the box in the Narthex for Mission Supplies. There is a list of items needed on the box. Cash is also accepted in lieu of supplies. Please note ‘Mission Supplies’ on the memo line of your check. Also, Kelman’s birthday will be the week of our mission trip, so if you would like to send him a card, please leave it in the box as well.

Mid-week Christian Education for Adults…

The Upper Room Class is reading and discussing “Prince Caspian” by C.S. Lewis.  This book is the second of Lewis’ Narnia series to be made into a movie, due to be released in May.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the class.  Join us upstairs at 9:15 on Sunday mornings.

Tuesday night Bible Study led by The Rev. Dr. Gene Davenport, meets on Tuesdays 7:00 p.m. The class is studying the Book of Revelation.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study led by Dr. Brady Whitehead meets on Wednesdays 10:00 a.m. in the Library. Everyone is welcome.

Text Box: The altar flowers are given to the glory of God in memory of Amelia Alexander, in honor of her life, birthday and Mother’s day by Andrea Alexander and family.
CoffeeHouse Theology. This group is open for Christians who enjoy spending time reading, writing or discussing serious theology. We gather on the second Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. until 6:30 with "formal" discussion to begin at 6:30 p.m. Because we wish to keep this group of a size conducive to discussion, we are asking that you call ahead. If you're interested, please call 506-4160 and leave a message, or email theologeeks@gmail.com.

Other Items of Interest…

Saint’s Luke’s automated sprinkler system contract has been awarded and will be installed in the April/May time period. Gardeners please hold off with any seasonal or permanent plantings this Spring on the church grounds until after the sprinkler system installation is complete. Many thanks again to each and every one who has contributed funds and Jimmy White who will be donating materials to this important project.

We are still receiving pledge cards.  This is just a reminder to turn them in as soon as possible so that we may prepare our 2008 budget. You may mail them to the parish office or put them in the offering plate on Sunday.

As a reminder, we have posted the 2008 altar flower calendar.  Please sign up on the bulletin board by the elevator for your Sunday to provide altar flowers. Please check the bulletin board for available dates throughout the year.

The Jackson Area Stay At Home Moms Group will meet on Thursday, June 5th    at 10:30 a.m. This group of mothers and young children meet on the first Thursday of each month.  This group is organized through a popular web site, www.meetup.com. For more info, contact Kiezha Ferrell at 426-5803 or ksferrell@gmail.com.

Recycle your paper and St. Luke’s benefits! All you need to do is take newspapers, magazines, junkmail, cardboard, or any other grade of paper to Southeast Recycled Fiber. Please tell the attendant at the window that you want your paper to go onto St. Luke’s account, and St. Luke’s will receive the benefit. Please see the bulletin board by the parish office or estlukes.org/recycle.htm for a map to Southeast’s facility. You can also bring paper on the last Sunday of the month and we will take it for you so bring your paper on April 27th!

Holy Grounds Coffee House will be May 30th at 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation’s “Fabulous Friday.” We have booked Dirt Pilgrims for a return engagement this month and Peggy King will provide the artwork display for April. Please join us for coffee, desserts from Dumplin’s, live music and art displays.

Yoga class meets on Wednesday afternoon in the Commons from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Beginners or new participants are welcome at any class. Fee Free. Equipment provided.

We are looking for artists to display works in conjunction with the Holy Grounds Coffee House each month. If you are interested, please call Karlie Head at 664-3516.

St. Luke’s has two college scholarships available to deserving students from our parish. The amounts have previously been erroneously stated. Due to current market conditions, the Meredith Scholarship for a graduating senior will be $1,500.00 this year. The Woodbury Graduate Scholarship will be $1,000.00 this year. We apologize for the misstating these numbers. The deadline for turning in your scholarship applications to St. Luke’s has been extended to May 15th. Please note that the Diocesan ECW Scholarship deadline is still May 1st.

Camp Gailor Maxon applications are available in the parish office or online at www.duboseconf.org. This camp is for students from 4th grade to graduating seniors. Please visit their website or call the parish office for dates for your age group and pricing information.
